Macrophotograph of the surface of the human tongue. The tongue is covered with numerous tiny projections called papillae, which differ in shape, size,& colour. Filiform papillae are thin, whitish strands. Fungiform papillae are larger & have a good blood supply, which makes them appear red. Several can be seen in this picture. Larger still are the circumvallate papillae, which are surrounded by a deep cleft or trench. There are 8- 10 circumvallate papillae at the back of our tongues & it is here that most of our taste buds are found. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size | |
