Cells of the mouth. Light micrograph of epithelial cells from the human mouth. Within each cell is the nucleus, appearing a raised dot. The epithelia are a diverse group of tissues that cover the entire external surface of the body and line all the hollow structures except blood and lymph vessels. These cells rest on a basement membrane which separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue. Blood vessels do not extend beyond the basement layer, and epithelial cells are dependent on the diffusion of oxygen and metabolites from underlying tissue. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size | |
