Eardrum and ossicles. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the eardrum (pink). The eardrum (tympanic membrane) is the first part of the middle ear. It is joined to the inner ear by three tiny bones called the ossicles. The malleus (brown,at centre) is joined to the inside of the eardrum. It articulates with the incus (upper right). This in turn is linked to the final bone, the stapes (not seen). The middle ear transforms air vibrations (sound) into vibrations in the fluid of the inner ear. These can then be turned into nervous signals and sent to the brain for interpretation. Magnification unknown | |
