The section shows the single row of inner hair cells (top),containing linearly arranged apical stereocilia. Below are 3 rows of V-shaped outer hair cells: the area inside each V- shaped group of stereocilia appears smooth and is termed the cuticular plate. The white,speckled areas are the surfaces of the outer pillar cells (vertical lines) and Deiter's cells,which are visible around the rows of outer hair cells.
