Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lens of a human eye,showing the arrangement of the cortical lens cells. The cells are flattened and hexagonal in cross-section,and arranged precisely in rows. Adjacent rows are jointed through "jig saw" junctions (interdigitations),which are believed to contribute to the degree of transparency of the lens. The lens of the eye is biconvex & elliptical in shape,& approximately 4mm thick at its centre. The adult lens has no blood supply & therefore must derive its nourishment from the aqueous & vitreous humour inside the eyeball. Magnification: X 4,800 at 8x8 inch,X 1430 at 6x6cm size | |
