| Nasal mucous membrane. Computer-enhanced light micrograph of a section through nasal mucosa tissue that lines airways of the human nose. The blue/pink band of epithelium is made up of pseudo- stratified columnar cells. Many of the upper cells in this layer are ciliated,although the hair- like cilia are not seen here. Goblet cells in this epithelium secrete a mucus onto the surface (at top). The cilia are coated in this sticky mucus which serves to trap dust particles as the mucus is moved along by cilia. Inhaled air is warmed and humidified in the process. Under the epithelium is the glandular and vascular lamina propria (green). Magnification: x100 at 6x4.5cm size | |
