Light micrograph of human nasal mucosa, found lining the airways of the nose. The layer at top is the mucus-secreting epithelium. The nasal cavity forms part of the system of airways that conducts air to & from the lungs. The walls of the conducting airways are supported by cartilage and bone which prevents their collapse during ventilation. The inner lining consists of a layer of ciliated (hair-like),columnar cells interspersed with mucous- and hormone-secreting cells. The properties of these cell-types serve to warm, humidify & filter inhaled air. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size | |
