Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section of the mucous-secreting epithelium lining an airway in the human nose. The nasal cavity forms part of the system of airways that conducts air to and from the lungs. The walls of the conducting airways are supported by cartilage and bone which prevents their collapse during ventilation. The inner lining consists of a layer of ciliated (hair-like),columnar cells interspersed with mucous- and hormone-secreting cells. The combination of properties of each of these cell- types serves to warm, humidify and filter inhaled air. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size | |
