Nerve synapse and brain. Artwork of the junction between two nerve cells. The junction between a nerve cell and another cell is called a synapse. This is where chemicals known as neurotransmitters (red spheres) cross the gap to trigger the other (postsynaptic) cell. The incoming nerve impulse (from top) releases the neurotransmitter, which crosses the gap and binds to receptors (holes) on the receiving nerve cell. Mitochondria (green tubes) produce energy within cells. The brain gets its computing and memory power from billions of such connections. Here,it is seen from the side, with the front of the brain at left. Neurons are seen in the background | |
