Neurones. Light micrograph of a section through healthy human neurones (nerve cells) in a ganglion. A ganglion is a grouping of nerve cells outside the brain and spinal cord. Each neurone consists of a cell body (large irregular oval),in which the nucleus (dark dot) is found, along with various nerve fibres (not clearly seen) down which impulses (messages) travel. Axon nerve fibres are the output processes, while branching dendrites are the neurone's sensory receptors. Around the cell bodies is a layer of tiny flattened satellite cells,a type of support cell.
