Cerebral cortex nerves. Light micrograph of a section through nerves in an area of cerebral cortex. This region of the brain is composed of grey matter. Grey matter contains the nerve cell (neurone) bodies and their associated fibres (axons). The numerous irregular lines (brown) over the region are the extensive branches (dendrites) of the neurones. The neurones of the cerebral cortex are arranged in a series of layers. Each layer contains neurones of a similar type. Evidence of this layering can be seen in this section based on slight variation in colour. Four distinct layers can be identified from left to right. Magnification unknown | |
