False-col LM of TS through human spinal cord
False-colour light micrograph of a transverse section through the human spinal cord. The internal butterfly-shaped core of the spinal cord (pink-orange) is the grey matter,consisting of unmyelinated nerve cells. Outside this is the white matter made up of myelinated nerve fibre bundles,or tracts. These carry information from the brain to the spinal column & vice versa. Although not clearly seen here,the spinal cord is wrapped in three layers of membrane,the meninges. The cord extends from the brainstem to the level of the second lumbar vertebra. 31 pairs of spinal nerves arise from along its length; the roots of 1 pair are seen at top left & right
