Brain scans made using Positron Computed Tomography (PCT) showing the varying rates of metabolism in different parts of the brains of three subjects listening to music. An injected radioactive analogue of glucose concentrates in areas of brain where metabolic activity is greatest; emitted radiation is measured and analysed by computer to give colour-coded images - red shows greatest concentrations. The technique illustrates how untrained listeners react to music more with the right, intuitive cerebral hemisphere, while trained musicians rely on the left, logical side of the brain | |
