Monocyte. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a monocyte (macrophage) in a blood capillary of the "zona reticularis" of the adrenal gland. The monocyte (yellow) is the largest type of white blood cell. Here it is passing through a porous capillary (violet) which has a red blood cell and blood platelets (yellow globules). Pro- truberances on the surface of the monocyte help it to move. The monocyte migrates into tissues to scavenge and engulf cellular debris and foreign micro-organisms. Monocytes thus play an important role in the initial phase of the body's immune response. Magnification: x6,000 at 6x7cm size. x8,570 at 4x5 | |
