Spleen. Light micrograph of a cross section through the spleen. The spleen has a fibrous outer capsule (light pink, top right). The nodules of white pulp (purple-staining) around blood vessels (pink circles) contain populations of lymphocyte cells. These initiate immune responses against diseases. The white pulp is embedded in red pulp (pink) where old or defective red blood cells are broken down. Trabeculae (light pink strips, lower left) are filaments of connective tissue which provide structural support to the organ. Magnification unknown | |
