False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human T-lymphocytes. They are white blood cells,& one of the component cell types of the human immune system. T-lymphocytes (T-cells) different- iate in the thymus and then progress to the lymph nodes and spleen. They are distinct from the functionally different B-cells,which are derived from the bone marrow. T-cells are of primary importance in the cell-mediated immune response, but they also influence the actions of B-cells,whose immune role is determined by the antibodies incorporated into B-cell surface membranes.
