Bone marrow. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of various precursive blood cells differentiating in human bone marrow. The continuous renewal of all types of blood cells is necessitated by their relatively short lifespan. The process by which mature cells arise and mature is termed haemopoiesis. The five main cell types, erythrocytes (red cells),lymphocytes, granulocytes, monocytes & thrombocytes (platelets) all derive from a single multipotential stem cell. These cells divide slowly prior to giving rise to the five discrete cell types. Magnification: x2,300 at 6x7cm size | |
