False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a myelocyte from human bone marrow. A myelocyte is one of the series of precursor cells that gives rise to the granulocytes - the group of white blood cells that includes the neutrophils, basophils & eosinophils. One factor in the class- ification of white cell types (the presence of cytoplasmic granules) is illustrated here by the small red circular objects within the pink- coloured cytoplasm. The curved nucleus appears green-yellow. Bone marrow is the site of haemopoiesis, the process by which blood cells are derived. Magnification: x8400 at 6x7cm size | |
