Nuclear angiogram of a normal human heart showing the left ventricle in the process of pumping blood into the main artery of the body, called the aorta. The blue/greyish areas show the highest concentration of blood in the ventricle. The image was made using a gamma camera. Blood from a patient was labelled with a radioactive isotope & reinjected back into the bloodstream. The radioactive isotope emits a small amount of gamma rays, which are detected by the gamma camera, analysed by computer & displayed on a screen. The gamma camera enables physicians to observe the heart as it is functioning | |
