Semi-open capillary. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a section through a semi- open arterial capillary of the ovary. Capillaries are the smallest blood carrying vessels of the body. At centre (dark red) is an erythrocyte (red blood cell) contained in the lumen. Surrounding the lumen are the endothelial cells (green) with large nuclei (pink). The outermost layer of the capillary is composed of smooth muscle cells (orange) with elongated nuclei (pink). These cells control the opening and closing of the capillary lumen by contracting and relaxing. Magnification: x5,600 at 5x7cm size | |
