Endothelium. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the layer of cells, known as the endothelium or tunica intima, which lines the internal surface of blood vessels. The endothelium is composed of a thin sheet of simple squamous epithelial cells, which are supported by an underlying basement membrane and connective tissue. A large number of microvilli (white dots) enables the passage of nutrient substances from the blood flow. The bulges correspond to the underlying nuclei of the cells.
