Cartilage. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hyaline articular cartilage. Cartilage is a type of connective tissue consisting of cells called chondrocytes (seen here as bulges),embedded in an intercellular matrix which they synthesise and secrete. Hyaline cartilage is characterised by a translucent matrix and is mainly found in the walls of conducting airways and in the joint areas. In the latter case it is referred to as hyaline articular cartilage which, thanks to its smooth and slippery surface, enables movement of the joints.
