Normal spine and pelvis. X-ray of healthy human lumbar spine (lower back). Skeletal features include the 10th,11th and 12th thoracic vertebra (at top) with ribs attached either side. Below T12 are the five lumbar vertebrae (L1 at top,L5 at bottom). At lower centre,below L5 is the top of the sacrum. Either side of the sacrum (lower left and right) are the large pelvic bones. The transverse processes may be seen either side of the vertebrae and appear as faint projections to the left and right. The abdomen contains the liver,stomach and intestine. Dark patches occurring in regions of soft tissue (yellow) are areas of gas within the large intestine.
