| Evolution caricature. Engraved caricature of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Apes or monkeys being introduced to another ape who lives in "polite society" by Mr Punch,a cartoon character. The upper-class ape (right) is dressed in the fashionable clothes of the day and holding the fortieth volume of a book that he has been reading. This cartoon of apes trying to improve themselves was drawn in response to Darwin's idea that humans had evolved from ape-like creatures.
