Witch interrogation. Engraving of a suspected witch being tortured during her interrogation by having water forcibly poured into her mouth whilst she is being stretched on a rack. Between the late middle ages and the early 18th century witches were seen as being the cause of many problems from disease to crop failure. The attempted solution was to kill those suspected of using magic, who were usually female. Often the only evidence offered against them at their trial was their own confession which had been extracted under torture. Engraving of an interrogation in 17th century France | |
