Equipment for sutures. Two pipes with windows in them used for holding flesh in place and watching out for where the needles go; and two threaded needles triangular in section. These were used by Ambroise Pare (1510-1590). Often considered the father of modern surgery because, unlike his contempories,he practiced ligature rather than cauterisation (without anaesthetic) as a method of stopping bleeding. He is also remembered for his discovery that dressing a gunshot wound had more effect than disinfecting it with oil. This picture was published in his book "Of Wounds in Generall" | |
