Bedlam,an engraving by the English artist William Hogarth (1697-1764),depicting mentally disturbed patients on a ward at the Bethlehem Hospital,London. The original engraving was published in 1735 & comprised plate 8 in the series "The Rake's Progress". Dissolution of character & destructive self-indulgence have resulted in the Rake (semi-naked,bottom left) to be admitted to the lunatic asylum. Ignored by the other inmates,he is comforted by a kind-hearted woman whilst the attendants fit him with leg- irons. His incarceration is serenaded by a demonic violin-player,who wears a manuscript on his head | |
