Alcoholism. Engraving from 1855 of an alcoholic having to be supported by his wife and son. The man appears untidy whilst the boy is wearing no shoes, suggesting that his father spent all his money on alcohol. Alcohol is an addictive substance which acts as a depressant on the nervous system, and so reduces anxiety, tension and inhibitions. Dependency on alcohol (alcoholism) is an illness which leads to withdrawal symptoms when drinking is suddenly stopped. Excessive consumption of alcohol over long periods may cause irreversible damage to the heart, liver, brain and nervous system. Illustration entitled Very Full | |
