Brain veins. Historical illustration of the veins and sinuses of the brain. The brain is drained of deoxygenated blood by wide channels called venous sinuses. The top diagram shows the sinuses (thick blue vessels) in the dura mater (the outermost membrane of the brain) between the brain and the skull. At lower left is the top of the brain and the wide channel of the main sinus along the middle (not coloured),with veins (blue) draining into it. Most of the sinuses meet at the base of the rear of the skull. The smaller diagrams show details of the sinuses. Colour lithograph by Fairland from The Vessels of the Human Body,1837.
