Soldier having his foot X-rayed (1899). Historical photo of a Boer War (1899-1902) soldier having his foot X-rayed. In the background is a portrait of Queen Victoria. The soldier has his foot on a photographic plate; an electric discharge X-ray tube is above the foot. The X-ray tube has no lead shielding,so the soldier's whole body would have been subjected to X-rays. The harmful effects of an X-ray overdose were unknown at the time. The soldier had a bullet lodged between his toes. SPL photo V800/007 is the X-ray of this soldier's foot showing the bullet in place. The Boer War was fought between Britain and the Boers, the Dutch settlers in South Africa | |
