Deodorising trainer. Smelly trainer in a box about to be deodorised. This technique, developed by Robin Gilbert, uses nitric oxide to kill the bacteria responsible for offensive odours. The small pot at centre left contains sodium nitrite. The syringe at far left holds citric acid. When the box is sealed, the acid is injected onto the sodium nitrite, releasing nitric oxide gas. Gilbert took the idea from the body's defence systems. The skin naturally produces nitric oxide to kill off bacteria and prevent infection.
