Malaria. A mother watches over her small child who is comatose with severe malaria in the children's ward of a Tanzanian hospital. Severe malaria is caused by the single-celled parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which is transmitted to human blood by bites from infected mosquitoes. The parasites multiply in red blood cells, causing bouts of fever when they burst out. Other symptoms include anaemia, jaundice, kidney failure and,if the brain is affected, convulsions and coma. Emergency treatment includes blood transfusions and the drug chloroquine, although resistance to this is now widespread. Malaria kills about one million children every year in Africa alone | |
