Percussion chest examination. A general practice doctor uses the technique of percussion to examine a woman's lungs. The woman stands upright while her back is tapped by the doctor. The quality of the sound produced when a finger strikes the skin depends on the state of the underlying tissues. An experienced percussionist is able to diagnose several conditions by this method. If the lungs contain liquid,as in cystic fibrosis, the tapping will produce a dull sound. Air in the space between the lungs and the chest wall (pneumothorax) produces a rather hollow note. This technique is valuable as it is quick and easy to perform | |
