MODEL RELEASED. First aid for bleeding (image 1 of 3). Trainee first aider applies pressure to and elevates the wrist of a volunteer acting as a wounded casualty. The first aider is wearing disposable gloves to protect himself from possible infection from the casualty's blood. He is controlling blood loss by applying pressure to the wound with his hands. Pressing on the wound for at least 10 minutes promotes blood clotting. The first aider is also raising the casualty's injured arm above the level of his heart. This slows blood flow to the injured area. (See photo numbers M910/042 and M910/043 for the wound being dressed and bandaged.) | |
