MODEL RELEASED. Checking for a pulse. Trainee first aider checks that a volunteer acting as an unconscious casualty has a pulse. In this exercise, the first aider will have already discovered that the casualty is not breathing. He is now checking to see if the heart has stopped beating by feeling for the pulse made by the carotid artery. The first aider puts two or three fingers onto the neck beside the Adam's apple and feels for five seconds. If a pulse is present, the first aider must breathe for the casualty by artificial ventilation, the "kiss of life". If there is no pulse, chest compressions combined with artificial ventilation will be necessary | |
