Laser cancer detector. Dr Gerwin Puppels examining a cancer-detecting probe. The fibre-optic laser device can distinguish between cancerous,pre- cancerous and healthy cells in seconds,as well as identify harmful microbes,to give instant diagn- oses. Adding it to a scalpel may allow a tumour to be removed while not harming healthy tissue. Most of the light scattered back to the probe from tis- sue is the same as the original laser light. Some, however, returns at other wavelengths, giving a unique Raman spectrum. Comparison with a spectral database allows tissues or microbes to be identif- ied. Puppels is one of the team from Erasmus University,Netherlands, that designed the probe | |
