| Neck artery and vagus nerve,post-mortem. The carotid artery (centre,running left to right) runs down through the neck,extending from the brainstem to the chest and abdomen. The vagus nerve (white,narrow) runs parallel to this artery and can be seen here along its bottom edge. The carotid supplies oxygenated blood to the head,and that the vagus nerve connects all of the body’s organs (except adrenal glands) to the brain. Post-mortem examinations,also known as autopsies,are carried out to identify a cause of death,and to assess the health of a dead person's organs | |
