Whooping cough antibiotics research. Antibiotic drug (disc) being tested on colonies of whooping cough bacteria (Bordetella pertussis,white) being cultured on an agar growth medium in a petri dish. The exclusion zone around the disc demonstrates the effectiveness of the antibiotic. The bacterium infects the lungs,usually of children,and causes intense coughing followed by a prolonged,audible inspiratory effort (the whoop). Antibiotics do not prevent the disease once coughing begins,but can reduce its severity and the bacterial infectivity. Infection usually confers immunity,though it can also be fatal,especially in infants. Grown on a nutrient Mueller-Hinton agar enriched with blood
