Laboratory technician performing an Analytical Profile Index (API) test. This is a method used to identify bacteria based on biochemical reactions between the bacteria and various chemicals placed in the API wells. This produces a pattern of colour changes on the API strip which is a signature for that particular species of bacteria. The API test is here performed in order to detect bacteria responsible for disorders related to food poisoning such as salmonella infections. The image was taken in one of the 52 laboratories found throughout the UK forming the Public Health Laboratory Service | |
