Apparatus for measuring skin water loss. These evaporimeters are used to measure trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL),which is the rate of water evaporation from the skin. They do not measure the level of dehydration of the skin, but can measure the effectiveness of skin moisturisers in preventing water loss. Normal TEWL values are 2-5 grams per square metre per hour. They can reach values as high as 90-100 grams per square metre per hour after skin stripping (such as washing with harsh cleansing products) or if the skin has eczema | |
