MODEL RELEASED. Lung function test. Asthmatic man breathes hard into a spirometer, while a doctor reads the graph being produced. It is believed his industrially-induced asthma is caused by spray paint, constricting airways in the lungs (broncho- spasm) and making breathing difficult. The spirometer measures total volume of air breathed out (forced vital capacity) and expiratory volume after 1 second. The patient will then be subjected to paint-spray tests and his lung function taken again to establish the severity of asthma. Bron- chodilator drugs may be prescribed as a treatment.
