Spanish flu research. Sample blocks containing lung and brain tissue from victims of the 1918 "Spanish flu" pandemic in which about 20 million people died. A list of child victims is also seen. Researchers at St. Bartholomew's Hospital,London, lead by Professor John Oxford, are using this wax- mounted tissue to study the nature and cause of the pandemic. Using molecular biology, they hope to isolate flu virus genetic material from the clinical samples. This will show whether a particularly virulent flu virus caused the pandemic,or environmental factors such as the first world war were to blame. This may help predict future pandemics | |
