Artificial bone research. Hand holding a rolled segment of artificial bone (at top) consisting largely of sheets of collagen, seen beside a piece of rabbit bone. This research at Oxford University headed by Dr Jan Czernuszka, aims to develop a material which mimics the properties of living bone. Using collagen (a body protein),calcium phosphate (a crystalline component of real bone) and an amino acid catalyst, the researchers have developed a form of artificial bone. It can be moulded to shape, would not suffer rejection by the body, and may prove extremely resistant to stresses. Applications may include: joint replace- ment, healing of fractures, and cosmetic surgery | |
