Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV),which may be transmitted through sexual intercourse. There may be an interval of up to 18 months between infection and wart development. The partner of a man with genital warts must have regular cervical smear tests as HPV increases the risk of developing cancer of the cervix. Warts may be removed surgically or by the application of the drug podophyllin,although they commonly recur
