Hypertrophic prostate. Light micrograph of a section through the prostate gland showing hypertrophy (enlargement). This condition, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia,is very common amongst elderly men. The stroma (dark blue) surrounding the acini (white) contains connective and muscle tissue. The tissue separates the acini, the lining cells of which (purple nuclei) produce seminal fluid. Hyperplasia (increased cell numbers) and hypertrophy (cell growth) in this area may put pressure on areas of healthy gland. If the urethra is compressed, urine flow may be impaired.
