Varicocele. Close-up of a man's scrotum with vari- cocele: varicose veins around the testis. The skin around the testis on the right is bulging with swollen veins. Varicocele is caused by blood coll- ecting in a vein in which a valve has failed. The condition is very common, affecting 10-15% of men,and almost always occurs in the left testis. Vari- cocele is usually harmless although it can produce aching and,in some cases, causes infertility by damaging sperm production. Aching can be relieved by wearing tight, supportive underpants, which helps blood to flow out of the scrotum. An operation to divide and tie off the swollen veins may be carried out if the sperm count is low | |
