Enlarged prostate: Intravenous urogram (IVU) showing an enlarged prostate, revealed by the elevation of the base (neck) of the bladder (bottom, filled with white contrast medium). The IVU is an X-ray image in which the urinary tract has been outlined by prior injection of a radio- opaque contrast medium that becomes concentrated in urine. This IVU shows the drainage of urine from both kidneys (top) down the ureters & into the bladder. The raised, uneven outline of the base of the bladder indicates an abnormal prostate. Enlargement of this accessory sex gland occurs in elderly men; the subsequent obstruction to the neck of the bladder impairs urination | |
