Testis with syphilis. Light micrograph of a section through a testis damaged by the sexually transmitted disease syphilis, here in its tertiary stage. There is severe fibrosis (excessive growth) of the connective tissue (wispy pink) between the seminiferous tubules. The tubules themselves (pink lobules) are damaged, and show no sign of cell detail, and have little or no central lumen (opening). They are not able to function in this state, and all sperm production is halted. Externally, this manifests as a painless swelling of the affected testis. There is no treatment at this stage.
