Thrush. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing fungal infection by Candida albicans,cause of the sexually-transmitted disease,thrush (candidiasis). Small dark fungal spores are seen at lower left and upper right. Large pink epithelial cells from the vagina are also seen throughout the image. C. albicans is a yeast-like fungus found on the skin,and in the respiratory,alimentary & female genital tracts. Normally harmless,it can become pathogenic when the body's resistance is weakened through (for example) antibiotic treatment. Diseases caused including oral or vaginal thrush and vulvo-vaginitis.
