Genital herpes. Close-up of the scrotum, the pouch that contains the testes,of a patient affected by genital herpes. This is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus that produces a painful rash on the genitals. After an incubation period of about a week the virus causes itching, burning, soreness and small blisters in the genital area. The blisters burst to leave painful ulcers which heal within 10 to 21 days. Although genital herpes cannot be cured,an early treatment with antiviral drugs will reduce the severity of the attack. Subsequent attacks occur when the patient is anxious, depressed or run down | |
